Dr. Aziz Asphahani was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Founders Award for his heavy influence on corrosion science and education, as well as his longstanding and continued commitment to the mission and goals of the NACE Foundation.
A NACE member of more than 40 years, Dr. Asphahani served both on the NACE International Board of Directors from 1988 to 1994, and on the NACE Foundation Board of Directors from 2002 to 2008. Dr. Asphahani’s early involvement as one of the inaugural members of the NACE Foundation Board of Directors was instrumental in the creation and development of the NACE Foundation as we know it today.
As chairman of the ASM Educational Foundation in 2004, he championed the partnership between the ASM Materials Camps for Teachers and the NACE Foundation, and paved the way for the overwhelming success and popularity of the NACE Foundation cKit program. With his extensive background in corrosion and metallurgy, Dr. Asphahani also played a key role in curriculum development for the corrosion engineering program at the University of Akron, and pushed to consolidate the program through association with the NACE Foundation.
Previously, Dr. Asphahani began his career as a corrosion engineer in 1975 with Haynes International and CABVAL, and retired in 2006 as the President and CEO of CARUS Chemical Co. He has served in many professional organizations, including the American Chemistry Council Board of Directors, the American Society of Materials, the ASM Educational Foundation, the American Water Works Association, and the Golden Institute.
Dr. Asphahani’s dedication to corrosion science and education is evident by his contributions and commitment to the industry, and we honor Dr. Asphahani as our 2014 Founders Award recipient on behalf of the NACE International Foundation Board of Directors. With more than 65 papers on corrosion and high-performance alloys, eight patents, and numerous honors and awards to his name, Dr. Asphahani’s exceptional knowledge and ongoing work in the industry will undoubtedly continue to “inspire the next generation of corrosion professionals”.
